Can you hear the sound of hysteria?

Pannic Productions has announced that their first show for 2019 will be the Queensland community theatre premiere of Green Day’s AMERICAN IDIOT. The blistering, high energy musical will be coming to The Gardens Theatre, QUT in June for a strictly limited season.

Green Day’s AMERICAN IDIOT tells the story of three friends who are living in post 9/11 America. Jaded by their small-town lives and feeling disenfranchised from what they view as the “American Dream”, they set off to explore life in a big city. What follows is a journey of love, loss and self-awareness, set to the Grammy Award winning music of Green Day.

Seasoned Director and Lighting Designer Andrew Haden is excited to bring the musical to life for Brisbane.

“It is a huge honour to be staging the Queensland community theatre premiere of Green Day’s AMERICAN IDIOT with Pannic Productions,” he said.

“We’ve only been in rehearsals for a couple of weeks, and I am already blown away by the fiercely talented cast, crew and production team putting this show together. It’s a definite testament to the amazing local talent we have here in the South East.

“If I could say one thing to Brisbane it’s this - fantastic productions and talented performers aren’t just found on the big stages like QPAC. They’re on the smaller, local stages, too. There are so many dedicated, passionate people in Brisbane’s creative community making beautiful, arresting, impactful, entertaining works of theatre, and Pannic Productions is so inspired and excited to be part of that community.”

Mr Haden believes Green Day’s AMERICAN IDIOT appeals to both dedicated theatregoers and first-timers alike, given the show’s relatable plot that perfectly compliments the well-known pop-punk score.

“Although set in the early 2000s, the themes of Green Day’s AMERICAN IDIOT are just as pertinent today as they were then. Socio-political unrest and a sense of unease for the future still run strong, not just in the USA, but all over the world. While a lot of musical theatre interacts with social issues, Green Day’s AMERICAN IDIOT is entirely grounded in a reality that many have lived through, or can relate to on some level.

“Very rarely does a show straddle punk and musical theatre like this one, but it makes perfect sense to me; I see the punk side screaming for change, demanding things be examined and people be heard... while the musical theatre side forces optimism and hope. That if things are so bad there are cracks appearing, then maybe those cracks will let in the light. That’s what we’re going to show Brisbane, and I can’t wait for Brisbane to see it.”

Ooof. Two weeks ago we hosted our inaugural 'Pannic at the Disco' dance party, 'Nightmare Before Christmas' at The Foundry in Fortitude Valley, as a 2019 season launch, and boy, it was a cracker (pun absolutely intended).

We like to march to the beat of our own drum and we also love to party with all of our friends, so when it came to announcing our 2019 season, a dance party was the natural choice.

It isn’t a secret that most theatre people relish in any opportunity to don a costume and put on some wild makeup (it’s what we do best!); and as our season launch was going to take place close to Christmas, it made complete sense to incorporate some festive cheer; but we wanted to take a darker, more edgier approach to our seasonal celebrations, so we threw a li’l Halloween into the mix. In the lead up to the event we wondered what characters and costumes were going to parade through the door at The Foundry, and wow, our guests did not disappoint.

We had dead elves, festive zombies, living-dead fairytale characters, a Grinch, and a myriad of awesome characters showing their ID at the door and making their way upstairs to join us to celebrate the year that was, and to get excited about the year that will be. Our season launch was such a wonderful night surrounded by awesome people with kick-ass music and prizes. Don’t despair if you missed out on our launch - we had such a great time that we’ve decided to host more dance parties in the New Year!

In case you missed it, Pannic Productions’ 2019 season will kick off with AMERICAN IDIOT in June, and WE WILL ROCK YOU in September. Both will be performed at the beautiful Gardens Theatre at QUT Gardens Point. Situated on the edge of the city Botanic Gardens, the Gardens Theatre is a stunning inner-city performance venue and we are very excited to be performing there next year. Audition information will be coming out soon and tickets will be made available shortly afterwards. It has been such a different experience watching how this show has been cast. Andrew, our director, was adamant from the outset that a performer's gender would in no way limit what roles were available to them in this production - 'whoever is best for a role, will be cast in that role' was the mantra repeated again and again during auditions.

With such an outstanding turnout of highly talented auditionees, we truly were spoilt for choice to cast The Wall.

Our willingness to be open to 'non traditional casting' of this production has meant that Pink, the lead character in our show, has wound up being portrayed by the incredible Maree Butterworth. Even though Pink is usually played by a male performer, Maree definitely has the power, honesty and vocal chops to do this highly dynamic role justice.

The themes explored in The Wall are truly universal - and will resonate with every person who sees this electrifying production. However, even though we didn't set out to deliberately explore things such as gender roles, modern feminism and our patriarchal society, with a female lead in place that is another layer that has been added to the piece.

Make sure you see Marie, and the rest of our cast, bring this show to life in August!
